The North American Summer Esperanto Institute 2004 will again be held at the School for International Training (SIT), a world famous venue for language and teacher training in Brattleboro, Vermont. The instructors have prepared a three level program of study which emphasizes the active use of Esperanto in intercultural communication, understanding, and cooperation. A special seminar for Esperanto teachers featuring the most modern instructional methods in teaching languages will be offered. The class sessions emphasize basic conversational ability, knowledge of basic language structure and vocabulary, and the usage of Esperanto in typical interpersonal encounters. The focus is on the ability to speak and to understand spoken language. In addition, participants study the language's history and culture. The course is typically conducted in Esperanto, with the use of explanations in other languages if needed. 3 undergraduate credits, pass/fail. Esperanto 2000: Gaining Confidence in Esperanto Course Description and General Goals of Course This course, designed
for students who have made an initial study of Esperanto, emphasizes
conversational ability, knowledge of sentence structure and vocabulary,
and the usage of Esperanto in typical intercultural encounters in
Esperanto. In addition, participants study the language's history and
culture. The course will typically be conducted in Esperanto, with the
use of explanations in other languages if needed. 3 undergraduate
credits, pass/fail. Course Description and General Goals of Course This course addresses the needs of advanced students in a variety of areas, including the linguistics of Esperanto; advanced language skills (translating, interpreting, composition, oratory); Esperanto literature; and social, cultural, and political aspects of the Esperanto community. This varied focus is especially useful for those preparing to teach or to take advanced examinations in Esperanto. 3 Undergraduate Credits, pass/fail. Teaching Methods in Esperanto Course Description and General Goals of Course This course is designed for teachers of Esperanto. Students will study comparative teaching methodologies and strategies, teaching and learning styles, theories of language learning and acquisition, educational theory, applied linguistics, and specific educational issues relevant to Esperanto, the international culture of Esperanto speakers, and teaching of interculturalism and interlingualism. Students will also study current standards and norms for the assessment of language proficiency. The goals are to increase the competence and confidence of those who teach Esperanto, provide information to teachers about the most current and successful teaching approaches that are available, provide opportunities for observation and analysis of actual teaching sessions, and provide practice sessions for the development of new teaching skills. The course will be taught exclusively in Esperanto.

Levels Three and Four both completely in Esperanto and adapted from two popular eastern European textbooks, focus on grammar and Esperanto history. Although they both contain word lists with Esperanto definitions, a good English-Esperanto dictionary would be helpful, especially for translation exercises. No cassette is included in the course materials; however, students are encouraged to exchange tapes with their instructors.
